50 Swedish Names for Baby Girls (2024)

In 2024, some of the top girl names in Sweden were Noemi, Freya, Lilly, Ines, Hailey, and Luna. But despite their popularity, these names aren’t of Swedish origin. In fact, many Swedish names have German, Russian, and Norse roots, and even more of them are derivatives of popular English and Hebrew names.

We compiled a list of gorgeous Swedish names for baby girls, many of which are part of the US top 1,000. However, some of the names you will come across are native to Sweden and have yet to make waves around the world.

A common name in Sweden is Fredrika, which is the feminine version of the German name Frederick. And just like Fredrick, Fredrika means “peaceful ruler.”

The Russian and Slavic name Gala is also fairly common in Sweden. This simple yet feminine name means “singer,” and was actually a top trending name in Spain back in 2019 — although in Spain, the meaning of this name is “calm or healer” and has nothing to do with singing.

You may notice that many Swedish names hold different meanings in Sweden than they do elsewhere in the world, which is the case for names like Inga and Maj, which mean “hero’s daughter” and “May,” respectively. In other parts of the world, however, the Norse name Inga means “guarded by Ing,” whereas Maj means “drop of the sea, bitter, or beloved.”
